Built in or freestanding: when fitted furniture is worth it

Fitted furniture is sold on looks and bought for space. The real question is not which looks better in a photograph, it is whether your room is awkward enough to need something made for it.

What does built in furniture actually give you?

The space a shop bought unit wastes. Built in furniture runs wall to wall and floor to ceiling, using the gaps a standard sized box leaves behind.

In a typical Irish bedroom, a freestanding wardrobe leaves a gap at each side, a gap on top and a gap behind. None of that is storage.

Fill those gaps and you often gain an extra hanging section without the room losing any floor. That is the whole argument for fitted, and it is a measurable one.

When is freestanding the better call?

When the room is square, the ceiling is standard and you may move within a few years. A regular room does not need a made to measure answer.

It is also better when you want to change your mind. Freestanding furniture can be rearranged, sold or taken with you; a fitted unit stays with the house.

We say this to people at the design visit when it is true. A straight wall in a new build box room does not need anything custom.

Is built in always more expensive?

Per unit, usually yes. Per usable litre of storage, often no, because a fitted run holds more in the same footprint than the freestanding equivalent.

The comparison people make is a fitted wardrobe against one flat pack wardrobe, when the honest comparison is against the two or three you would need to cover the same wall.

Where fitted genuinely costs more is in the fitting itself, which is real joinery in your house rather than a box delivered flat.

Which rooms suit built in best?

Anywhere the shape is against you: alcoves, under stairs, sloped attic ceilings, corners and the wall over a bed. Awkward space is what fitted furniture is for.

Chimney breast alcoves are the clearest case. Nothing sold in a shop fits an alcove properly, because no two alcoves in Ireland are the same width.

Under stairs is the other one. That wedge cannot be bought off a shelf, and left alone it usually becomes the place things go to be forgotten.

Does built in furniture make a room feel bigger?

Usually, because the storage reads as part of the wall rather than as objects standing in the room. Fewer edges and shadows make a small room read larger.

A freestanding unit casts a line at the top and gaps at the sides, and the eye reads all of those as clutter even when the room is tidy.

This matters most in small bedrooms and small living rooms, which is where most of the requests we get come from.

What happens if you move house?

It stays. Fitted furniture is part of the house, so factor that in if a move is likely inside a few years rather than a decade.

That is not automatically an argument against it. People fit kitchens and bathrooms they will leave behind for the same reason: the years of use are the point.

But if you are genuinely unsure how long you are staying, it belongs in the decision honestly rather than being waved away.

How do you decide?

Measure the wall, then price what freestanding would actually take to cover it properly. If the honest answer is two or three units and gaps, fitted wins.

If it is one unit against a flat wall in a regular room, freestanding is very likely the sensible answer and we will tell you so.

The awkwardness of the room, not the size of the budget, is what decides this. A small awkward room needs fitted more than a large square one does.

Is built in furniture worth it in a small room?

It can be taken out, but it is built into the walls and will not survive intact. Treat it as part of the house rather than as movable furniture.

Do built in wardrobes need a flat wall?

No. They are scribed to whatever the wall actually does, which is the main reason they work in older houses where nothing is straight.

How long does fitted furniture take to make?
