The hall is the first thing anyone sees and the place everything gets dumped. Coats on the bannister, shoes across the floor, school bags where you trip over them. Fitted storage fixes it, and in most Irish halls the challenge is doing it without narrowing a space that is already tight.
What works in a narrow hall?
Shallow storage. A run only slightly deeper than a coat hook, with a bench over closed shoe storage, changes a hall without closing it in.
Depth is the whole problem. A full depth cupboard in a narrow hall makes it a corridor. A shallow run, roughly the depth of a hanging coat, holds far more than people expect while leaving the walkway intact.
Measure the hall at its narrowest point, take off the depth you are considering, and see what is left. Anything under about 900mm of clear walkway starts to feel tight with two people in it.
Open hooks or closed doors?
Hooks for the coats in daily use, doors for everything else. A hall with everything on display never looks tidy.
The honest version of how halls work: the coats people wear this week want to be grabbable, so hooks win. Everything else, the shoes, the bags, the hats, the dog lead, looks like clutter and belongs behind a door.
The usual arrangement is hooks above a bench with closed storage under it, and a tall cupboard at one end for the rest.
Why does the bench matter?
Because putting shoes on standing up is how shoes end up in the middle of the floor.
A bench at sitting height with shoe storage under it is the single most useful thing in a boot room. Shoes come off sitting down and go straight into the space underneath.
It also gives somewhere to put a bag while you find keys, which is the other reason halls get cluttered.
What suits a house with children?
A low run at their height, with their own hooks and their own shoe space.
Hooks at adult height are useless to a six year old, so the coat goes on the floor. A lower rail of hooks, with a labelled space under the bench for each child, is what makes the system actually get used.
