What actually makes a kitchen read as modern?
Flat slab doors, consistent horizontal lines, and the absence of visible hardware and mouldings.
A framed shaker door carries a shadow line that reads traditional. A flat slab door has none, so the eye follows the run rather than stopping at each door. That continuity is most of the effect.
The other half is what you remove. No cornice, no pelmet, no plinth detail, handles either absent or reduced to a simple bar. Every element you take out makes the remaining lines stronger.
Which finishes hold up?
Matt laminates and painted matt finishes wear best. High gloss looks striking and shows everything.
Gloss reflects light, which is genuinely useful in a dark room, and it also reflects every fingerprint and every scratch. In a family kitchen that becomes a daily wipe down rather than a weekly one.
Matt, particularly the fingerprint resistant finishes now available, gives the same flat modern look with far less maintenance. It is worth asking specifically about fingerprint resistance rather than assuming matt means immune.
How do you stop a modern kitchen feeling cold?
Timber somewhere, texture on the worktop, and warm rather than blue toned lighting.
An all white or all grey handleless kitchen under cool LED lighting can end up feeling like a showroom rather than a room. The usual fixes are a timber element, often an island or open shelving, and a worktop with visible movement rather than a flat colour.
Lighting temperature does more than people expect. Warm white under cabinet lighting changes the feel of the same kitchen entirely.
What details matter most?
The grip line, the worktop join, and where the runs stop.
On a handleless kitchen the grip line runs the length of the kitchen, so it has to be dead straight across every cabinet. That is a setting out job and it is where poor fitting shows.

Does modern suit an older house?
It can, as a deliberate contrast. Where a room has heavy existing joinery a shaker kitchen often sits more comfortably, and we will say so.
Is handleless the same as modern?
Handleless is one route to it and the most common one, but a flat slab door with a simple bar handle reads modern too.
Will a modern kitchen date?
The door style is fairly stable. Colour and handles date faster, and both are cheaper to change than the kitchen.
