A handleless kitchen gives you an unbroken run with nothing projecting from it. In a small or open plan room that quietness is worth a lot, because the kitchen stops shouting at the rest of the space. There are two ways to build it and the difference between them is worth understanding.
J profile or recessed rail?
A J profile puts a curved lip on the door itself to grip. A recessed rail sets a channel into the carcass above the door.
J profile, sometimes called a J pull, is built into the door. It is simpler, costs less, and the grip runs the full width of every door and drawer. The lip is visible from the side, which some people notice and most do not.
A true recessed rail keeps the door face completely flat and puts the channel behind it. It is the cleaner look and the more expensive build, and it needs the cabinetry set out precisely for the rail line to run true across the whole kitchen.
Does handleless work in a small kitchen?
It is one of the best things you can do in a small kitchen, because nothing projects into a room that has no space to spare.
Handles catch on people, on clothes and on bin bags in a narrow galley. Removing them removes that daily friction and visually calms the room, which makes it feel larger than the same kitchen with hardware on every door.
Pairing handleless with a light, low contrast colour is the standard way to make a small kitchen feel bigger, and it is worth seeing in 3D before committing.
What finishes suit handleless?
Flat slab doors in matt paint, matt lacquer or a fingerprint resistant laminate. Gloss is the one to think twice about.
Matt finishes are the natural partner because the whole point is a quiet surface. High gloss handleless looks striking in a photograph and shows every fingerprint along the grip line in reality, which is exactly where hands go.
Fingerprint resistant finishes exist and are worth asking about specifically if you have children.
What are the honest downsides?
The grip line collects marks, and a very traditional room can make a handleless kitchen look out of place.
Every open of every door happens at the same spot, so that line needs wiping more often than a handle would. Nothing serious, but worth knowing.

Is handleless harder to open?
No. Both the J profile and the recessed rail give a full width grip, which is often easier than a small knob.
Can you mix handleless with handles?
Yes, and it is common. Handleless on the tall run with handles on an island, or the reverse, both work if it looks deliberate.
Does handleless cost more?
A J profile is close to a standard door. A true recessed rail costs more because of the extra cabinetry work. Both are itemised on your quote.
