What a kitchen renovation in Dublin actually involves, start to finish

Most people renovate a kitchen once, maybe twice, in a lifetime. So it is completely normal to have no idea what the process involves, how long the stages take, or what actually drives the price up and down. This guide walks through the whole thing in plain terms, so you know what you are getting into before you talk to anyone.

Stage one: design and measure

Everything starts with the room. A proper renovation begins with someone standing in your kitchen with a tape measure, not with you picking doors from a brochure. The measure captures the real dimensions, where the services run (water, gas, electrics), which walls matter, and how light moves through the room during the day. Then the design work turns that into a layout: where the cooking happens, where things are stored, how people move through the space.

This is the stage where good decisions are cheap and mistakes are expensive. Moving a sink on a drawing costs nothing. Moving it after the plumbing is in does not.

Stage two: see it before you commit

The step most people skip, and should not, is seeing the finished kitchen before ordering it. Full 3D plans show you the actual room with the actual layout, colours and finishes, from every angle. It is the difference between hoping the grey works with the worktop and knowing it does. This is also where you catch the things a flat drawing hides: a wall unit that boxes in the window, an island that leaves too tight a walkway, a tall unit that fights the ceiling line.

Stage three: manufacture

Once a design is confirmed, the kitchen is made. Custom kitchens are manufactured to your measurements rather than picked off a shelf, which is why they fit Irish rooms, with their alcoves and uneven walls, so much better than modular units. Manufacture takes weeks rather than days, and a straight answer on the timeline should come with your quote, in writing.

Stage four: strip out and fit

The disruptive part is shorter than most people fear. The old kitchen comes out, any plumbing and electrical changes happen while the room is open, and the new kitchen goes in. How long you are without a working kitchen depends on the scope: a same layout replacement is quickest, moving services adds time, and structural work like removing a wall runs on the builder's clock rather than the kitchen fitter's. Whoever fits your kitchen should be able to tell you the sequence and the number of days before anything starts.

What actually moves the cost

Two kitchens the same size can come out very differently on price. These are the levers that matter, roughly in order:

• Layout changes. Keeping the sink, hob and appliances where they are is the single biggest saving. Moving services costs real money.
• The size of the room and the amount of cabinetry in it. More units, more cost, fairly linearly.
• Worktop material. The spread between laminate and stone is wide, and worktops are a bigger share of the total than most people expect.
• Door finish. Painted, wrapped or solid finishes all price differently on the same carcass.
• Appliances, if they are changing. Integrated appliances cost more than freestanding like for like.
• Structural work. Opening a wall to the living room is a building job with a kitchen attached, not the other way round.

A useful exercise before any quote: decide which of these you actually care about. Money spent on a stone worktop and good hinges is felt every day. Money spent moving a sink two metres mostly is not.
