Can you get a painter in Kildare through The Home Upgrade Co?
Yes. We do not paint in house. We pass the job to our painter, who covers County Kildare and does the work and the quoting himself.
The Home Upgrade Co. is a kitchen, window, door and fitted furniture contractor. Painting is not one of our own trades, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we have is a painter we deal with, the same arrangement we have on made to measure metal gates, where the gate maker makes and fits and we take the enquiry.
In practice that means one WhatsApp message to us, and our painter comes back on the actual job. Nothing is priced from a template, because a hallway with a stairwell in a house from the 1970s and a two bed apartment being turned around between tenants are not the same piece of work even when the wall area is similar.

What is included in interior painting?
Rooms, hallways, stairwells and landings, ceilings, and the woodwork that goes with them, which means skirting, architrave, doors and frames.
The part people underestimate is the woodwork. A room repainted with the old skirting and architrave left as they were rarely looks finished, because the new wall colour shows up every chip and every yellowed patch on the gloss beside it. Ask for the woodwork to be listed in the quote as its own line, so you can see whether it is in or out rather than finding out afterwards. Where the doors themselves are past painting, that is a different job again and we do cover it, on internal doors supplied and fitted.
Stairwells are the other line worth reading twice. A stairwell is high work over a moving flight of stairs, it needs platforms or a proper stair ladder rather than a set of steps, and it takes longer per square metre than any bedroom in the house. A quote that treats the hall, stairs and landing as one ordinary room is a quote that has not been thought about.
Ceilings are priced separately from walls for the same reason. Ceilings in older Kildare houses are often the surface carrying the most history, from a stain over a bathroom to a patch where a light was moved, and they usually need spot priming or a stain block before they will cover in two coats.
What is included in exterior painting?
Render and pebbledash walls, soffits and fascia, gutters and downpipes, window frames and external doors, and the render on piers and boundary walls.
Pebbledash deserves a line of its own because it is everywhere in Kildare and it behaves differently from flat render. The stones give the wall a far larger surface area than a smooth wall of the same size, so it takes noticeably more paint and more time to work into, and the first coat on a previously unpainted dash swallows material. If a quote for a pebbledash house looks the same as a quote for a smooth rendered one, ask why.
Soffits and fascia are the other line to check. Where they are uPVC they are cleaned rather than painted as a matter of course, and where they are timber they are the part of the outside of the house most likely to need real repair before any paint goes near them. Rotten timber painted over is money spent twice.
Gutters, downpipes, window frames and the front door are usually small money against the walls and they are what people actually notice from the road, so get them named in the quote rather than assumed.
Do you paint apartments and rental properties?
Yes. Apartments, rentals between tenancies and properties being got ready for sale are all ordinary work, and they usually need to be done inside a fixed window.
Apartment work has its own constraints and they matter more than the painting. Lift bookings, loading bay access, the hours a management company allows work to be carried out in, and whether the communal hall can be used to carry materials all decide how the job is planned. Tell us these things in the first message and the price comes back faster and closer to the truth.
For a turnaround between tenants the date is usually the whole point. Tell us the day the keys come back and the day the next tenant moves in, and our painter will tell you honestly whether it fits, rather than agreeing to it and then not finishing.
Do you paint offices, units, shops and other buildings?

Commercial painting is mostly a question of when rather than what. An office that cannot lose desks for a week, a shop that cannot close, or a school that can only be touched in the holidays each need the work planned around the building instead of the other way round. That is a conversation to have before a price, not after it.
One honest limit. We have not been given a statement about large contract work, tendering, or the insurance level our painter holds, so this page will not claim any of it. What preparation should a painting quote include?
Filling, sanding, caulking, washing down, priming bare surfaces and masking, all written out line by line. Preparation is what separates a real quote from a cheap one.
Two painters can quote the same house and be two thousand euro apart with neither of them lying, because one of them has priced the preparation and the other has priced two coats over whatever is there. Paint is a small part of the cost of a painting job. Time is nearly all of it, and preparation is where the time goes. This is the list to hold any quote against, ours included.

How much does painting cost in Ireland?
Published Irish figures in September 2026 run from about 300 euro for one room to about 4,500 euro for a three bed interior. Those are other people's numbers, not ours.

Read on 23 September 2026. Published ranges move, and none of these figures were given to us by our painter. Treat them as a way of telling a sensible quote from a silly one, in either direction.
Two things to do with that table. First, ask any painter whether VAT is included in the figure they hand you, because a price with VAT left off will always look cheaper than a price with it in. Second, look at what sits under the number rather than at the number, because the cheapest of three quotes is usually the one with the least preparation written into it.
Our own answer is the plain one. Every job is priced after a look at it. You get a written price with the work set out before anybody starts, and you are under no obligation when you get it.
How much does a painter charge per day in Ireland?
The figure published across Irish sources in September 2026 is 200 to 350 euro a day. We do not publish our painter's day rate because we have not been given one.
Day rates are a poor way to buy painting anyway, and most painters will tell you the same. A day rate rewards slow work and it gives you no way of comparing two painters, because the fast one who preps properly and the slow one who does not will quote the same number. A price for the job, with the preparation listed, is the thing to ask for.
Where a day rate does make sense is small, undefined work. Touching up a few rooms, finishing something half done, or a snag list before a sale are all jobs where nobody can sensibly price the whole thing in advance.
How long does it take to paint a three bed house?
It depends on the amount of preparation, not on the square metres. You are told the number of days with the written price, before you commit to anything.
We are not going to put a number of days on this page, because we do not have our painter's own figure and the honest answer is that the walls decide it. A house being repainted in similar colours over sound surfaces is a very different amount of work from the same house where the walls are cracked, the ceilings are stained, there is a dark colour to be covered, or the woodwork has never been sanded.
What you can reasonably ask for is the number of days written on the quote, and a start date you are told rather than one you have to chase. Ask for both, from anybody you are considering.
When should you not paint the outside of a house in Ireland?
When the wall is wet, when rain is due, or when it is too cold for the paint to cure. Check the minimum temperature printed on the tin.
Masonry paint needs a dry surface and a dry spell after it goes on, and the tin itself is the authority here. Most masonry paints specify a minimum air and surface temperature, commonly around five degrees, and a period with no rain after application. Read the tin your painter intends to use, because the figures differ by product and it is the only source that actually governs the job.
In practice that puts the reliable exterior window in Ireland somewhere between spring and early autumn, with the shoulders of the year depending entirely on the week. A painter who tells you he will not start a rendered wall in the second week of November is not being awkward with you, he is protecting a coat you are paying for.
Can you paint over old exterior paint?
Only if what is underneath is sound. Flaking, chalky or blown paint has to come off first, because new paint is only as good as the coat under it.
The test is simple enough to do yourself. Run a hand over a dry wall, and if it comes away dusty the old coat is chalking and the wall needs a stabilising primer before anything else. Press at the edges of any flaking and see how far it lifts. Where paint has blown away from the render in patches, the wall underneath usually needs attention rather than another coat.
The other question is what the old coat actually is. An old wall with a masonry finish takes a modern masonry paint readily. A wall that was coated in a thick textured or waterproofing product years ago is a different conversation, and it is one to have before a price is agreed rather than on the first morning.
Do professional painters wash the walls before painting?
They should, and outside they should wash the wall down properly. Paint will not stick to grease, nicotine, dust, moss or algae.
Inside, kitchens and anywhere there has been smoking are the two places it matters most, and a wall that is not washed there will show through the new coat within months. Outside, a shaded or north facing wall in Kildare will carry moss and algae whether you can see it or not, and painting over growth simply seals it in to come back through.

The commuter corridor along the M4 and the M7 is where most of the housing is, and the estate houses in Naas, Newbridge, Maynooth, Celbridge and Leixlip built through the 1990s and 2000s have a lot in common: plasterboard and skim inside, a rendered or dashed outside, and hall, stairs and landing in one open run that is the biggest single interior painting job in the house.
Further west and south, towards Kildare town, Monasterevin and Athy, there is more older housing, more solid wall construction and more pebbledash, and preparation counts for more there than anywhere else in the county.
