Search for window prices in Ireland and the first page of Google will quote you figures that differ by a factor of ten for what sounds like the same window. None of those guides has seen your house. This guide explains why the numbers disagree, what actually decides the price, and the one grant that is genuinely fixed.

How much do new windows cost in Ireland?

Published guides quote wildly different figures for the same window, because count, size, frame material, glazing and access change every job's price.

The honest answer is that there is no national price for a window. Every published range you will find is an average across jobs that have little in common: a ground-floor apartment with four standard openings and a three-storey period house with bay windows are different jobs in every way that costs money.

That is why we do not publish a price list. A figure typed into a website cannot know how many openings you have, what condition the reveals are in, or whether the front of your house needs scaffolding. What decides the price of new windows?

Is there a grant for replacing windows in Ireland?

Yes. SEAI pays a fixed windows grant by house type, €1,500 for an apartment up to €4,000 detached, plus €800 per external door.

This is the one genuinely fixed number in the whole conversation. The SEAI windows and doors grant pays €1,500 for an apartment, €1,800 for a mid-terrace, €3,000 for a semi-detached or end-of-terrace, and €4,000 for a detached house, plus €800 per external door for up to two doors. The amounts are set by house type, not by what you spend.

Eligibility rules apply, including the age of the home and the energy standard the new windows must meet, so check the SEAI page before you count on it. It is worth reading before you get quotes, not after: a grant of that size changes which jobs make sense to do together.

Is it worth replacing 20-year-old windows?

Usually, if seals have failed, frames have warped or rooms feel cold. Twenty-year-old double glazing performs far below a modern A-rated unit.

Failed seals show up as fog between the panes, and once a unit has fogged it has lost its insulating gas and is not coming back. Draughts around the frame, condensation on the inside of the glass on cold mornings, and rooms that will not hold heat are the other signs.

Glazing has moved a long way in twenty years. A modern A-rated unit holds heat that older double glazing simply loses, which is why window replacement qualifies for an energy grant at all. If your windows are from the nineties or earlier, the comfort difference is usually obvious within the first winter.

Is it cheaper to replace all windows at once?

Per window, yes: one survey, one delivery and one crew spread across more units. But staged replacement is normal and nothing forces the full house.

Doing the whole house in one job spreads the fixed costs, one survey, one delivery, one set-up, across every window, so the per-window figure comes down. It also means one round of disruption instead of several.

That said, plenty of people do the worst side of the house first and come back for the rest, and there is nothing wrong with that. Because our quotes price each opening separately, you can see exactly what any stage would cost and decide with real numbers rather than a lump sum.

Why do window quotes vary so much?

Because quotes include different things. Fitting, disposal of the old windows, internal reveals, sills and certification appear in some quotes and not others.

Two quotes for the same house can be hundreds apart per window and still describe different jobs. One is supply only. Another includes fitting but not taking the old frames away. A third includes fitting, disposal, making good the internal reveals and new sills. Until you know what is inside each one, the totals tell you nothing.
