Sliding or hinged wardrobe doors: which suits your bedroom

Once you have decided on fitted wardrobes, the next question is the doors, and it changes how the room works every day: sliding or hinged. Neither is better. They suit different rooms and different habits, and choosing on looks alone is how people end up with doors that annoy them for a decade. Here is how to choose properly.

The case for sliding doors

Sliding doors need no swing space. In a tight bedroom, that is the whole argument: the bed can sit closer to the wardrobe, nothing blocks the door of the room, and the floor in front of the wardrobe stays usable. Sliding doors also carry mirrors beautifully. A full height mirrored slider does the job of a dressing mirror while making a small room feel noticeably bigger and brighter, which is why they are the default answer for box rooms and city bedrooms.

They also suit wide openings. A wall to wall wardrobe with three sliding panels looks calm and architectural in a way that a row of five hinged doors does not.

The case for hinged doors

Hinged doors open the whole wardrobe at once. You see everything, you reach everything, and nothing hides behind an overlapping panel, which is the everyday frustration of sliders: there is always one section you cannot get at without shuffling doors. Hinged doors also take internal extras more gracefully: hooks and mirrors on the back of the door, and drawers inside the wardrobe that need clearance a sliding track can steal.

On style, hinged doors carry a classic panelled look better, which matters in period homes where a sleek slider can feel like it arrived from a different house.

What the room decides for you

The part that matters either way

Whichever you choose, quality lives in the hardware. A sliding door is only as good as its track and rollers: cheap ones rattle, jump the rail and stiffen with age, while good ones glide with one finger for years. For hinged doors it is the hinges: soft close, properly adjusted, fixed into solid carcass material. This is invisible in a photo and completely obvious after six months of daily use.

See both in your own room before deciding

This is exactly the kind of decision our free design visit settles. We call out anywhere in Dublin and Leinster, measure the bedroom, and our designers create full 3D plans showing your fitted wardrobes with the doors you are considering, so you can compare sliding and hinged in your actual room rather than in your imagination. You get the designs and an itemised quote, and the decision stays entirely yours. No cost, no obligation.
