If you are looking at fitted wardrobes in Ireland, Sliderobes is usually the first name you meet, and there is a good reason for that. They have been designing and making fitted wardrobes for close to four decades, sliding doors are their speciality, and they have installed thousands of them. Who are Sliderobes?

They design, manufacture and install, and they cover bedrooms, home offices, living spaces and what they call unusual spaces, meaning slopes and alcoves. They describe having installed thousands of fitted wardrobes with sliding doors. They also have showrooms in Belfast and several locations in Britain, and their design team covers every county in Ireland.

Where Sliderobes is the stronger choice

On four things you can check before you buy, they are ahead of us: the guarantee, the years behind them, finance, and the fact you can walk into a showroom.

Their guarantee is 10 years on all their furniture. Ours on wardrobes is 2 years on wood. That is a real difference and it is the first thing we would compare if we were buying. They also offer finance, subject to status and eligibility, and we do not offer finance at all. If spreading the cost is what makes the job possible, that decides it on its own.

Then there is the track record. They have close to forty years and thousands of installed wardrobes behind them, with customer reviews published on their site. We are new, and we do not have that yet. If you want to see the work of a company that has been doing this since before you owned the house, they can show you and we cannot.

How do the two compare, side by side?

Do you get a free home design visit with both?

Sliderobes send a local designer to your house, measure the space and show you 3D drawings of the finished wardrobe, free and with no obligation. We call out, measure the room and photograph it, then our designers produce full 3D plans of your actual room with an itemised quote, also free and with no obligation.

So the design visit is not the thing that should decide this. Book both. Two free visits cost you an afternoon and give you two sets of drawings and two quotes to hold against each other, which is a far better position than picking on a brochure.

What does each of you actually cover?

They do fitted furniture across several rooms. We do fitted furniture too, and also the kitchen, the internal doors and the windows, on one quote.

This is the real difference, and it only matters in one situation: when the wardrobes are part of something bigger. If you are fitting out a new build, finishing an extension or doing a whole house, you can have one design visit that covers the kitchen, the wardrobes, the internal doors and the fitted furniture, one itemised quote, one contractor and one number to ring. Sliderobes are not set up for the kitchen or the doors, because that is not what they do.

If the job is just the bedroom, that advantage disappears and you are choosing on the things in the table above.

What does a fitted wardrobe cost?

Neither of us publishes a fixed price, and for the same honest reason: the cost follows the run and the specification, not a standard unit.

Sliderobes say the final cost depends on dimensions, door styles and interior configurations, and that they give a tailored estimate after a consultation. Our answer is the same. Cost tracks the linear metres of wardrobe and its height rather than the size of the bedroom, then the doors and the interiors, so a small room with a long run costs more than a big room with a short one. What we do instead of a price is measure the room, design it in 3D and give you one complete itemised quote within two working days. That costs you nothing and commits you to nothing, and you get a quote you can take apart line by line and hold against anyone else.

Everything we make is premium and made to the highest spec: made to measure, scribed to the walls, designed in 3D and fitted by our own team, and it is priced to that standard. Quality at this level is not a budget purchase, and we would rather say so here than at your kitchen table. If you are working to a tight budget, we are honestly not the right fit.

• The guarantee is what matters most to you: theirs is 10 years, ours is 2 years on wood.
• You need finance to make the job happen: they offer it and we do not.
